FRESH/ MIMICKING BIRDS

Signed to Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse's Glacial Pace Recordings, this is one charming threesome to watch.

All signs say Mimicking Birds is just another moniker Modest Mouse's frontman decided to hide behind. They've toured with them, recorded their self-titled offering from Brock's home studio, and signed to his label. Brock also helped produce the record. The band is actually comprised of Nate Lacy's vocals, Tim Skellenger on guitar, and Aaron Hanson on drums. What should keep guaranteed interest from the legions of Brock fans are the similarities in style.

Vocally, Lacy sounds like the quiet moments of Ugly Casanova (surprise; an Isaac Brock side-project), with the sincerity of a quivering, sonic heart on his sleeve. The main point of difference is that the acoustic tracks are soft and sweet, with a slight folk element instead of a tendency to rock-inspired moments. In listening to the tracks, you won't feel like you've heard it all before. Lacy's talent for songwriting is where this whole project began, and it's what sees it through.

Hailing from Portland, Oregon - the birthplace of all things indie - the trio are bound for big things. For now, though, they're offering up free downloads of some gorgeous home recordings not featuring on their album through their Virb profile. Tracks to listen out for are 'Home and Somewhere Else', the downright-eerily heartfelt 'A Perfunctory Clockwork Yawn' and 'Pixels', though there's plenty of gold that didn't make the final record. Check out album tracks at http://www.myspace.com/mimickingbirds.

Sounds like: Isaac Brock, mellowed to the point where he could make a chill-out, 'long coastal road trip' album.
